Temecula  (CA)   (Images of America)

In the far southwest corner of Riverside County, a center of commerce grew in the 19th century near the junction of the Temecula and Murrieta Creeks. A stop along the Southern Emigrant Trail and Butterfield Stage route brought a few travelers to Temecula who liked the place and stayed. A cattle baron grazed his stock in the rich pastureland and dominated the economy until the mid-1960s, when an investor bought the land to build a planned community. Today Temecula is the home of over 90,000 people. Old Town Temecula celebrates its frontier past, and the Temecula Wine Country entices visitors to take a taste. The Pechanga Band of Luiseno Indians operates a casino and resort near Rancho del Paisano, the former home of the author who created Perry Mason, Erle Stanley Gardner.

2010 Hot Wheels #1 '67 Shelby GT 500 (Stunt Jump)

Hot Wheels Collectors' Information
This is the first in the series of 2010 Hot Wheels New Models, the '67 Shelby GT500.

About the 1967 Ford Mustang
The 1967 model year Mustang was the first model to feature a major redesign with the installation of a big-block V8 engine. The overall size, interior and cargo space were increased. Exterior trim changes included concave taillights, side scoop , square rear-view mirrors, and usual yearly wheel and gas cap changes. The high-performance 289 option was placed behind the newer 320 hp (239 kW) 390 cu in (6.4 L) FE engine from the Ford Thunderbird, which was equipped with a four-barrel carburetor. Stock 390 4-speed manual transmission Mustangs were recorded quarter mile times of approximately 13 seconds and trap speeds of over 105 mph (169 km/h). In 1967, the base price for the GT500 was $4,195. The 1967 Shelby GT500 was equipped with the 428 Police Interceptor. The 428 Engine is said to be more tractable and usable than its more famous and noted brother, the 427. This is due to the smaller bore size in ratio to compression stroke.

Slaty Skimmers in Wheel

Slaty Skimmers in Wheel

The male is the dark blue one on top. Their position here is called "in wheel" and clearly illustrates why he needs that secondary set of genitals.

We learned on the Dragonfly Walk that their mating is pretty vicious, and the females basically have no say in the matter. If she crosses into his territory, he swoops in and grabs her behind the eyes with the claspers on the end of his abdomen, sometimes roughly enough to puncture her eye. Then she's stuck and has no choice but to go with it.

I had no idea dragonflies were so vicious to each other! I definitely learned a lot about them from PJ Dunn on the Dragonfly Walk.

Big Wheel

Big Wheel

Okay, when I was a kid, I used to ride my Big Wheel at top speed down the hill and pretend I was Knight Rider. Not the guy. The car. I wonder what kids pretended in this thing? Also, I wonder how they didn't kill themselves. Of course, I wonder how I didn't kill myself on my Big Wheel, either, because, I wrecked it plenty of times with no helmet and never broke anything. Also, I went all over the neighborhood by myself and I was like three! What the heck!? I wouldn't let me do that. Why don't they make Big Wheels for grown-ups?! Those things were so much freaking fun. Why am I talking about this? I don't know, but this reminds me of a Big Wheel, is I guess what I'm trying to say.

Okay, so one of the curators was like "Take all the pictures you want! :D" But then on the way out, we saw a sign that said "NO PHOTOGRAPHY RWAR!", so uh.. if you see this Mr. Curators, please don't be mad because we were told it was okay. :)

This is at the fairly amazing car and carriage museum on the grounds of the Frick Art Gallery and Clayton, the Frick mansion.

Ford Airstream ND3 4484 SM

Ford Airstream ND3 4484 SM

The Ford Airstream is a new concept car which made its debut at the 2007 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan. The Ford Airstream is a retro-futuristic crossover SUV that was inspired by the classic Airstream recreational vehicle trailers built since the 1930s. The modern Ford Airstream concept includes a plug-in hybrid hydrogen fuel cell drive system, called HySeries Drive, that operates exclusively on electrical power. Ford calls the Ford Airstream Concept "a futuristic look at crossovers" as "modern touring vehicle(s)" for recreational travelers. The concept vehicle was designed in cooperation with Airstream - a division of Thor Industries.

* 1 Powerplant
* 2 Exterior
* 3 Interior
* 4 Specifications
* 5 External links and references

The concept vehicle is powered by a rechargeable plug-in hybrid hydrogen fuel cell drivetrain, called HySeries Drive. This powerplant system was developed with partial funding from the United States Department of Energy, and is currently being tested on a prototype version of the Ford Edge. The Airstream Concept's wheels are driven by electric motors, which are powered by a lithium-ion battery pack. The Ballard Power Systems hydrogen fuel cell system recharges the vehicle's battery pack as needed, as a portable generator, and the vehicle can also be plugged in, to recharge between trips. The HySeries Drive delivers the equivalent of a combined city/highway equivalent fuel economy of 41 mpg (U.S.) (5.7 L/100 km). In pure-battery mode, the Ford Airstream Concept is designed to travel about 25 miles (40 km), before the hydrogen-powered fuel cell begins operating to recharge the vehicle's 336-volt lithium-ion battery pack. With a full load of hydrogen, the range increases another 280 miles (451 km), for a total of 305 miles (491 km). The sole exhaust emission from the operating vehicle is water vapor.

The Ford Airstream includes asymmetric doors. The passenger side door is a power clamshell hatch that runs two-thirds the length of the vehicle for loading of passengers and cargo. The crossover includes a rear hatch for loading cargo aft.

The interior was inspired by spacecraft images and environments portrayed in 2001: A Space Odyssey according to Ford. It is described as a "lounge atmosphere" meant to provide a relaxing experience while traveling. The instrument panel includes flush-mounted, touch-sensitive controls and a single multi-function gauge display with primary driving information. A center-mounted dual-view screen provides a camera view and secondary driver-oriented information, and also allows the front-seat passenger to view DVD films and work on the internet.

The front seats are captain's chairs that can swivel and rotate to face aft. The rear seats are lounge-like, and includes a 360-degree viewscreen for entertainment, games, internet access, and as a live camera feed. The concept vehicle seats include 4-point safety belts.

Tilt-A-Whirl

Tilt-A-Whirl

The Midway would not be complete with out a visit to the Tilt-a-Whirl.

Here's the history of the ride according to Wikipedia:

Tilt-A-Whirl is one of the best-known flat rides, designed for commercial use at amusement parks, fairs and carnivals in which it is commonly found. The rides are manufactured by Sellner Manufacturing of Faribault, Minnesota. The ride is commonly known for making riders experience nausea. (no kidding!)

Herbert Sellner, a woodworker and maker of water slides, invented the Tilt-A-Whirl in 1926, at his Faribault, Minnesota, home. Over the next year, the first 14 Tilt-A-Whirls were built in Herbert's basement and yard. In 1927, Sellner Manufacturing opened its factory in Faribault, and the ride debuted that year at the Minnesota State Fair.
Family legend states that Herbert experimented with a chair placed on the kitchen table. Herbert's son Art sat in the chair, and Herbert rocked the table back and forth.

The earliest Tilt-A-Whirls were constructed of wood, powered by a gas motor, and featured nine cars. Today, the ride is constructed of steel, aluminum and fiberglass, is powered by seven small electric motors, and features seven cars.

Since 1927, Sellner has manufactured more than 1000 Tilt-A-Whirls. Some of the rides produced in the 1940s and 1950s are still in operation. The rides were originally designed and built at the factory in Faribault, Minnesota. In January 2011 the company was purchased by Larson International, Inc. of Plainview, Texas.
A new Tilt-A-Whirl costs approximately USD $300,000 to purchase.
The oldest currently operating Tilt-A-Whirl is a 1927 model, still traveling with Tom Evans United Shows in the midwest. Between 600 and 700 Tilt-A-Whirls are still in operation.

Chrome Plating Motorcycle Wheels

chrome plating motorcycle wheels

    chrome plating
  • Chrome plating, often referred to simply as chrome, is a technique of electroplating a thin layer of chromium onto a metal object. The chromed layer can be decorative, provide corrosion resistance, ease cleaning procedures, or increase surface hardness.

  • (Chrome-plated) Dressed up (hot-rodders, originally)

  • In the 1930s, the USN started to chrome plate the bores of most guns to a depth of 0.0005 inches (0.013 mm).  This was "hard chrome," which is not the kind that you find on your father's Oldsmobile.  This plating increased barrel life by as much as 25%.

    motorcycle
  • motorbike: ride a motorcycle

  • MotorCycle is the title of a 1993 album by rock band Daniel Amos, released on BAI Records. The album was dedicated to the memory of songwriter Mark Heard.

  • A two-wheeled vehicle that is powered by a motor and has no pedals

  • a motor vehicle with two wheels and a strong frame

    wheels
  • A circular object that revolves on an axle and forms part of a machine

  • steering wheel: a handwheel that is used for steering

BROUGH SUPERIOR MOTORCYCLE 1939

BROUGH SUPERIOR MOTORCYCLE 1939

George Brough was without doubt the most outstanding figure in the motorcycle industry throughout the twenties and thirties and the SS100 model was his most outstanding product. Translated, SS100 meant Super Sports 100 mph. Tunder examples of the SS100 held the World's Two Wheel speed record five times, the last time in 1937 with a two run average of 169.7 mph and a one way speed of 175 mph. The SS100 was no circuit racer but mid-twenties racing versions won on sand and track and finished with final records at Brooklands banked bowl.By the late thirties the SS100 had matured into a luxury road bound super bike. George Brough who always wrote his own publicity material as well as designing, testing and selling his bikes, declared this model was "...capable of from 10 mph to 110 mph in top gear, was the fastest motorcycle on the road, was recognised throughout the world as a masterpiece and was the be all and end all of the motorcyclist's dream."
There had been a J A Prestwich engined model SS100 back in 1927-8 which would certainly do 110 mph - though not 10 mph - in top gear but this quieter smoother running version engined by Matchless Motorcycles was hard put to reach 100 mph.There were, of course, no consumer protection laws and advertising standards rules in those days and readers took it all with a pinch of salt. No onw was likely to argue with a manufacturer who had notched up 100 wins on his own bikes and in 1928 on a special racing SS100 had been the fastest man on earth on two wheels with a one way speed of 130 mph. For most enthusiasts it was all a dream anyway for the prices hovering around ?150....those lively chrome plated mudguards were extras, representing two years wages for many.Lawrence of Arabia had five Brough Superiors in a row.All Brough Superior adverts carried the slogan "The Rolls Royce of Motorcycles" George did not have permission from Rolls Royce, they never complained. Seen in the Transport Museum Kelvin Hall Glasgow.
